I told Jesse that the now defunct wxci80's geocities page had a unified playlist that I compiled from notes I made during shows from '87 to '92 or so. I think I have the html somewhere on an old harddrive... so now I just need to find a place to post it. Or post your top 25 XCI tunes or albums from your time there in the comments.

Some of my best and worst memories of XCI are from the summer months. On one hand you had the entire student center to yourself - for the most part. You could spin records all day long (especially if the dj who was supposed to relieve you never showed up) and afterwards - instead of running to class, you could hit Squantz, Candlewood or a friend's house...

On the other hand... instead of sleeping in - or going to a friends house or swimming... you had to be on the air.

So then I played Holst's "Mars", followed by "The Last Broadcast from Corregidor" early on Sunday Morning, followed by something like Brian Eno's Apollo or Utopia...

I'll bet Pandora or Genius won't do that...

good times.

WXCI's 37th

There's been a lot of buzz about WXCI's 37th anniversary.

At this time we're still waiting to hear the details.

In an earlier post I assumed (with geometric logic and dead reckoning) it would be held on the 20th of February.

Unfortunately I forgot I posted that for MONTHS.

In the meantime the aforementioned post triumphantly proclaimed the day with wanton abandon (in a sort of innocent school-girl way.

It is now my sad duty to caution you - that the date is not yet confirmed by the station or 'management' and I must admit there was a bit more Nostradamus, than authority in that post.

Now don't panic... It may well be on the 20th. I just don't know for sure.

But - I can assure you with 100% certainty that as soon as I hear the actual details I will post them here AND on facebook so that we can all firm up our plans to celebrate 37 years of independent - non-commercial - cooler than [insert noun] - broadcasting on Danbury's best college radio station ever.

Kinda ironic that my picture was with Jim Dyer. Jim took my yearbook picture way back in 1973 when he was yearbook Editor, and yep, my pic was taken right in the WXCI studio.

Since I was an English major for several math-challenged reasons, I can unequivocally state that there are only three hundred forty-something shopping days until WXCI's 37th birthday celebration. Be there or be square. Aw hell, maybe being square is cool again these days. I have no idea...

Sorry I missed Greg and some of the other folks I might have once remembered, and again, thanks to Hugh and the current WXCI staff for having us all pull the wagons into a circle (which according to an old Firesign Theatre album is the way to get better reception).

Can you believe it - I'm posting photos of the most recent anniversary / alumni broadcast day - and a whole month hasn't even passed by.

Hope everyone had a swell time.

Just so you know - The podcast is currently on hiatus - I think you can still access the thing - not sure how long.

I'll do what I can to start it up again and update it with new material at a new location - I've got old tapes and airchecks and all sorts of stuff I could upload - just haven't had the time to fiddle with.

Unfortunately, due to legal issues and record company cops - I don't think I have the permission to publish any tunes we used to play - so that means I can only include the talk-overs. Editing that takes time... so that's why I hadn't put loads of stuff up in the past.

So until I sort out all that nonsense - enjoy THIS nonsense.

Starting back in '88 or '89 (and until at least 1994), a bunch of us (myself, Louis Wahl, Rudi Hauser, Mike Wright, Pam Meister and others) got together each year about this time and did an all night Saturday broadcast in (what we said was) honor of Washington's Birthday.

Perhaps this was just a lame excuse to broadcast all night (WXCI used to sign off at midnight or 2am back then) - perhaps the fact that most folks were off that Monday and after 2am we could break format (within reason) were bigger factors... but hey we had fun and we taped many of them.

So I'm thinking that my contribution will be along the lines of an edited 20 year old vintage cassette broadcast of WXCI in the day.

GASP... is it really 20 years????

Yes... the airwaves need a stimulus... a bailout... a veritable shot in the arm, and you can give it to them.

You know about the allumni weekend. You know that's when DJs from WXCI's past get to sit in that sticky chair, talk into a stained microphone and gingerly avoid the chewing gum from getting on their knees.

You know you could join them.

But you said to yourself:

"It could never happen again"

"Who'd want to listen to me?"

and "There's probably no room..."

Well, it can, everyone, and there is!!

So - don't just stand there with your finger on your temple... put it on WXCI's console and get broadcasting again... at least for one little weekend.

According to Hugh:

"We still have some open times.

Also the Alumni Association is funding the coffee and cookies this year, so there will be refreshments, but no dinner."

I've heard nothing official.

I hear some say life is what you make it... and a few say that life is a party. I suspect the party can and will be where you make it... and just like the old days - it'll probably start informally at the station, and then end up passed out somewhere on campus (except now-a-days it's probably due to fatigue or low blood sugar).

We’re ready to sign people up for shifts for the WXCI Birthday on 2/28.

There will be 12 one-hour shifts that people can do alone or with others. It would be helpful if we have an idea of how many people will be there during a shift, but it’s not essential.

People can request times by sending an email to

He’ll try to keep you up to date on what’s open for the blog.

I’m planning on being there from about noon until maybe 9:00 at night (I’m getting too old to stay much later).

I’d encourage people who are in the area that day to stop by, even if they don’t do a shift. It’s always good to see old friends.

Bored DJs

Take 3 WXCI bored DJs: Rich Frohlich, Brett Landry and Michael Wright... Add an overflowing bin of recycled soda cans, a third floor open window, a lab coat, clip board and a video camera. Stir briskly for about 45 seconds and serve 19 years later.

Nah... I wasn't sleepin' .... I was just resting my eyes.

I'll post more photos and some audio on the old podcast soon.

Sorry to admit, but I actually haven't had a chance to look at all the pictures or listen to the airchecks yet.

After the snow in CT I came back to an avalanche in Texas... about five different projects for five different theaters, all due within a two weekend window.

It keeps me on my toes... and away from the updates.

Just thought I'd let you know.

WXCI 35th Anniversary Celebration

Where to begin? A wonderful time was apparently had by all, and many thianks have to go out to Hugh, the WXCI staff, members of the Westconn Alumni Association, past members of WXCI, and just about anyone else who had a hand in hosting a great event. As the evening wore on I was glad I didn't sign up for an air shift; it was too much fun hangin' with friends both new and old.

One of the highlights for me was when Tom Z handed me his cell phone and told me "You have to talk to this guy." It was Bob Wilson, who was the founder of the station and the reason we celebrated #35 last night. Bob sounded great and he clued me in to something I hadn't thought of.

Although WXCI celebrated #35 yesterday, the Campus Broadcast Association (the technical organizational name) was celebrating 40 years of existence, having been founded in 1968. We're all a lot older than we look (or act).

I hope Rich or Greg can help me post some of the pictures I took. I tried to log onto Rich's site, but it won't accept my password any more. I've been reduced to an incidental tourist there.

Again, thanks to all who helped put together this event, and to Rich & Greg who got these organizational blogs together.

So, what are we going to do for #36?

Thanks to some nearly pretty old technology - I recorded 11 hours of WXCI on MiniDisc.

(I got the tail end of Hugh McCarney on Tom Z's show - and everything thereafter.

I'm promised the Tom Z interview show (which will DEFINITELY be available on the podcast soon!)

I especially have recordings of the alumni who went on the air during our party - (5:30 to about 9:30) none other than:

Joe Mariano, Keenon Snell (00's)
Bill Reinheimer (70's)
and Bill Baker (80's)

I'm sure many of you reading this blog would really love to hear the whole 11 or 13 hours of shows on the podcast, but I'm a bit cautious about putting them on line as they are (music and everything).

Others have asked about listening to un edited recordings of the previous reunion shows.

How about this - If I put one disc together - does anyone have any thoughts on how copies could get to alumni who want it?

It looked like everyone had a great time. Not too many fights, nothing broken any more than it already was. In all accounts a thunderingly good success.

I think I recorded most if not all of the alumni broadcasts. Rudi, Fal, Mike, Laurie, Pam, John and myself left the studios by 1:30am or so. (a far cry from the overnights that we inflicted on our selves as late as 10 years ago when we celebrated Washington's birthday by broadcasting all night long... for no reason that seemed to make sense at the time or now)

In those days - prior to our computer dj robot slaves (as opposed to the fleshy ones) WXCI would sign on in the morning (more or less) and go dark after 2. This time, there was no sign off... we just potted up the Wixy Wobot and weft.

I plan to listen through the 12 or so hours of recordings and post what's postable on the pod cast.
Hold on...

12 hours... ?

geez.

Then again, if I follow the same pattern since the 33rd - I have about 11 months to do it.

Hi all.

Pardon the intrusion. The WXCI alumni day is at hand. Many of you will be at the studios and many more of you will be at the reception in the evening. But the majority of you are at remote locations, as far away as you can get. In case you want to look into the (train wreck) proceedings we have arranged to video stream of the TomZ show between noon and 2:00 Eastern time.

Providing that I get a good broadband connection in the studio the stream will be at the Ning site and UStream.

Snowy reunion...

How about that... I got into town yesterday - and this morning, I look out the window (and down my Dad's treacherous driveway) and there's bunches of snow on the ground.

And still more coming out of the sky.

There's nothing like this kind of weather to make a transplated yankee in texas feel like he's coming home...

I dare not tell my kids about it - they were already disappointed they couldn't come up to see grandma and grandpa - add missing a snow storm to the mix, and they'd be bawling.

I teased you about releasing WXCI podcast material prior to Alumni Weekend... well I put some together tonight.

Five little audio gems... or clups of fools gold...

I have a few files (described in a moment) uploaded to a holding area - and tomorrow after I recover from working all night - I'll get them ready for download.

I've got Tom Z's interview show from 2006, Bill Baker's, Gregory Wencek's and Morgan William's shows from 2006 - plus a question and answer panel from 2007 with Hugh, Tom Z, Bill Baker and Darryl Ort (I think) and an attendee who unwittingly represented every single student at WCSU... ) regarding LIFE AFTER COLLEGE RADIO...

So those podcasts are coming... and HOPEFULLY I can get them set up before my flight.

That's the idea, anyway.

Amazing - All that for only the price of a radio...

I'm talking the show that Tom Z is serving up (be it at 10 or noon).

I mean LOOK AT IT... This thing promises to be pretty swanky stuff suitable for a swell anniversary. And the guests that may be lined up... If only one or two of these folks calls in - it will be more than worth the price of admission.

I hope Tom doesn't mind me potentially JINXING the whole thing by revealing some of the folks... (for those who miss the broadcast, the plan is to podcast it for later) - OK... OK... I guess I won't go into specifics - but to give you a teaser - we're talking a possible interview with a Governor, newly installed Fire Chief, Rabbett (calling in from Hawaii), a television news anchor, a former Mayor...

All of them with alleged connections to WXCI which they may or may not disavow while connected to a radio representation of a polygraph device (except not really)...

Despite it's ominous presence - things seem to be working themselves out...

Dusting off the Podcast

I guess it's time to dust off the podcast.

I received a sign from the radio-gods (or demi-gods... or spirits or pixies... ah... I had a MOMENT... ok)

When I was attempting to organize my office (ok... clean off my desk) I found a minidisc of the WXCI stream from our 2006 (33rd) alumni weekend - AND also found a recording of the LIFE AFTER COLLEGE talk that was organized during our 2007 weekend.

Due to our litigious friends at the RIAA I don't risk playing any of the tunes that Morgan, Tom, Gregg, Bill, Rudi and Mike (and others) played during their shows - but I can play what they said. Some of the broadcast day was cut off due to streaming difficulties... then it ended in the middle of Rudi, Pam and Mike's shift...

So... it'll be just like a bunch of airchecks...

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Hi--

This February marks the 35th anniversary of WXCI, and we'd like to have a gathering to celebrate that, as well as to get together with old friends and make some new ones.

The date to save is Saturday, February 23rd, 2008. As in the past few years the current air staff will give up time to alums to do one hour shifts. People who have done it in the last year or two may have some suggestions (like bring your music on CD--you'll never find it in the library--and bring two copies).

We'd also like to have a buffet, similar to what we did ten years ago. I've reserved the first floor of Warner Hall (it wasn't here ten years ago), which is a nice space, and can fit a bunch of us. I've talked to the food service and have gotten their offerings, and will pick the menu in about a month. We'll have the space from six until ten or so.

My next tasks center around verifying addresses, finding lost people, getting the University to pay for postage, and so on.

Information Central will continue to be the WXCI Memories Blog (http://wxcimemories.blogspot.com/) or linked from it, through the courtesy of Rich Frohlich.

My experience at the Public Radio Talent Quest has introduced me to one more version of online social networking.

I know... we're doomed

Rather than something completely public, it's a bit more private and certainly more "face to face" (or as much as you can get on line). Rather than everything going through ME and a few of the other folks on here each person would have their own page. They'd have a few places to post things - photos - audio - video all sorts of junk like that as well as similar things on the main part of the site.

I'm not looking to kill the blog, but this would be in addition to this site - it's by invitation (as a member you can also invite other folks without going through me)

Anyhow, this is what I'm looking at.

If there's a general interest - I'll start it up and invite everyone I have on the WXCI email contact list. It might be good to start as we gear up for #35.

Like anything, we get out what we put in, but in the case of NING - it's more equal - as any member can carry on discussions or post things - even if the guy who started it all falls asleep for a few months.

Is it really going to be 10 years since the 25th anniversary? Gosh, it seems like the 25th anniversary was just yesterday. I think we should do one day commemorating 35 years ago, one day commemorating 10 years ago, and another commemorating whatever the hell it was we did two years ago. Meanwhile, I'll be trying to remember what I did last week.

In my opinion Boston's first album was the poster child album for the 70's -

I don't think there's one song on that album that didn't hit the charts in one way or another - you can still listen to it today and the style and energy is NOT old fashioned (in my opinion - I guess we need to ask some teens todayabout it... but to me - this was the sound of the decade)

Hey there,

I heard I was being tracked down the the dog I am! What's new?
I'm working for Time Warner Cable of NY/NJ in marketing, I got out of radio in 1985. I miss the good old days at the "wonderful wixy". I'm still having flashbacks from my time talking with Rabbit and Rasputen. And I kind of miss seeing Jimmy Dyer in the building late at night. Has anyone heard from my best man Mike Grady? I'll always miss my buddy Dave Landry, so sad that such a nice guy had to die so young from brain cancer, just horrible.

My time at WXCI was one of the main reasons I got my first job in advertising and production in cable. And I credit XCI with helping me with my pubic speaking when I became GM and had to talk to public officials. It was also great training on how to provide carefully crafted sound bites for the press, who gleefully parrot them unedited. Got to love the press.
I just got remarried, live in the Brewster area, and now have have six kids and two grandchildren.

Anyhow, cool web site. We didn't even have access to computers back then, but if we did it would have been very cool too.

Hi folks.

Been some talk about the fact that Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released 40 years ago (God that fact alone makes my skin shrivel).

It can arguably be said that Sgt Pepper's was one of, if not THE defining record of the 60's.

I pose this question to all the participating WXCI alumni:

What would you consider the defining album/CD of the 70's, 80's, 90's, etc. ?

I know we all have our favorites( my personal 60's selection would probably not have been Sgt Pepper's) but let's try to be realistic and consider the album you think had the greatest impact on music in general.

Let me add my comments about Alumni day:

1. By the time I got there, the remaining food included one stone-cold piece of what might have been a zucchini or maybe a poker chip or a large toenail dipped in batter, and two bottles of warm Sprite.

2. I tried to get a couple of Danbury cop friends of mine to detain Adrienne so I could do another hour, but she outran them.

Thanks to WXCI's current management for inviting us and thanks to Hugh for hanging around the entire day and making us all feel welcome.

I am looking forward to next year, which I trust will include hot food, cold beer and Adrienne's mysteriously slashed tires the day before.

"A quick blurb about my experience on Alumni Day"

Well it was great I had such a good time djing again at WXCI. I was granted life membership in 2002 but I haven't had time to take a shift since then really. So it was very refreshing to play some of the older songs that I used to play during my active membership. And some of my old listeners actually called up and requested some stuff so it was really surreal. Plus it was great seeing my old friends from college, some of whom I haven't seen in years. Jesse Grosslin I haven't seen in years and on alumni day I had the shift before him which was really cool because when I first became a WXCI jock, he was my GM and I had the morning shift right before him so it was alittle bit of deja vu. So all in all it was a great time and I can't wait for the big 3 5 next year.

Well, it was an honor and privilege to represent the original XCI air staff at alumni day. It was nice to meet Justin and some of the current folks who so graciously lent us the airwaves for the day and it's always great to see Hugh (someone close to my own age!).

My shift went well I guess. I found out early that it's a good idea to turn the mike ON prior to speaking. But that may have been the only glitch. Most of the segues were as smooth as they were 34+ years ago and it was fun to mix some of the old stuff (Beatles, Byrds, Batdorf & Rodney, Moby Grape) with more contemporary tunes (The Contrast, Whiskey town, Cotton Mather). Like Hugh says, "It's as easy as falling off a bike."

I also had a chance to listen to some of the other shows on the ride up and back. Baker still has a gift for the microphone and Stephan did a great job with "3rd Stone."

In all it was alot of fun & I'm looking forward to seeing all for the 35th.

I just got a note from Jesse Gosselin saying Nancy London died last Thursday.

Before Nancy was elected a Life Member of WXCI, for years she took a
badminton course so she could serve as News Director. She was also
the long-time producer and host of WESTCONN HAPPENINGS, and was
responsible for us meeting our public service obligation for the FCC.
Nancy was active at WXCI until last summer, when her cancer made
coming to the station too difficult. She continued to consult about
the show, though, even from her hospital bed.

She had also worked for a number of years for Cox Broadcasting,
starting (I think) at WNLK in Norwalk.

For those in the area, her funeral will be this Tuesday, Jan. 30th at
9AM at St. Anthony's Church in Litchfield.

We've missed her since she's been away, but there's a sad finality to
knowing she won't be coming back.

Life After College Radio

The email buzz has been favorable to forming a panel like what Hugh suggested.
I'm not sure if it would be broadcast, but it ought to be recorded.

Working title: "Life After College Radio"

... is there life after college radio?

Man, that's a loaded question.

After all, college radio... and radio in general has changed so much in the last 30 years (not to mention the last 5)... that the question of what happens next may be slightly philosophical.

It's not as cut and dry as the days when you could spin records on XCI and then scoot right into a commercial gig doing practically the same thing.

Once upon a time people with passion and talent for broadcasting (or music or audio production and advertising) had few options - college radio gave them a leg up into an industry that absolutely required experience.

Things change. Who needs a broadcast licence? Who needs a radio station?

Just get a computer.

Audio and broadcast equipment are being sold to both professionals and complete novices alike who podcast.

Computer applications (some of them free) allow folks to edit and produce audio in a digital environment.

YouTube, Myspace and other such websites provide the platform, and are a veritable cess pool of human expression, where you can, at the click of a mouse, hear more stuff by unpolished folks than college or non-commercial radio could ever give you.

So "what happens after college radio" may only be the beginning of the discussion.

Oddly enough, we talked briefly last night about this. It will happen on the last Saturday in February (the 24th), and the WXCI Program Director, Jen Ackerly, will again coordinate the shifts.

Shifts will probably be an hour, depending on the number of people who participate, and people are welcome to share a shift.

I was also thinking of trying to get a panel together for Friday afternoon to speak to students about Life After College Radio. If there is interest in this we'll see if we can get some funding for
refreshments, and maybe go out for dinner (unfunded) after.

During XCI's early period of "new music" (from Darryl Ohrt's 'Adventure Jukebox' to the full-time change in format and the rise of the 'Radio Underground'), many of us knew of CBGB's. Station staffers, jocks and others went to shows there, others heard about shows or bands that graced it's stage and there are others (like myself) who never made it there at all. With it's closing last night (10/15 with Patti Smith), another page is turned in the rich history of rock music. Another lost venue with an amazing laundry list of performances.

If you or someone you know went to CBGB's during it's heyday, or even over the last year, raise a glass and mark it's passing. There are plenty of places to see bands these days, but for some it won't be the same without that scrappy club in the Bowery.

Sirius Satellite Radio is opening up the mic to its listeners, inviting them to create and host their own national radio show, the company announced Tuesday (Sept. 19). D.I.Y. Radio (for do-it-yourself) will debut on Sirius' Faction channel on Sept. 24 ad air each Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

The move is similar to the open source radio concept pioneered by CBS Radio, which last year launched KYOU Radio in San Francisco, programmed with listener-submitted podcasts.

Each week, D.I.Y. Radio will put a different Sirius listener in control, allowing them to pick all of the music and say whatever they want, commercial-free and uncensored.

Earlier this year, Sirius launched Blog Radio on its Left of Center channel, featuring radio shows crated and hosted by music bloggers in America.

February is coming

I spoke with Hugh yesterday, and he tells me that he's going to help out with the next WXCI DAY (number XXXIV).

Perhaps all he needs to do is make sure the plans are on track.

We're going to look at what worked best last year, and see if we can keep this thing going - (with #35 in '08 being a super-big bash)

One thing he mentioned was the 'groups'. It seemed to be good for allums who worked together in the old days, to share a few slots. Safety in numbers, I suppose.

We ought to get support from the current staff. One point that was brought up last year, was that everyone at the station will eventually be an allum, so making sure this is a successful and reoccurring thing is as much for themselves as it is for us old farts. (kind of like Congress voting themselves a raise and a good retirement plan)

That's all for now.

I'll also see if I can dust off the WXCI podcast and get some of the 25th anniversary stuff on line as well as the new stuff that was emailed to me from the most recent one.

So much stuff...

I just need to find the time... In the last few months (since my Mom's accident and 99% recovery) I've been doing a whole bunch more sound design for theaters in Dallas - so add that to my already busy schedule....

Sorry... I swear I thought I saw GW's name as the guy who sent me that there emaily-thang-a-ma-call-it.

Anyhow... I thought of something else.

With Digital radio coming over the horizon, anyone who has a broadcast license is going to have a huge opportunity to do niche programming (i.e. there's the potential to do good, old-fashioned radio again) in addition to the safe, focused group pablum they normally throw up at the transmitter.

The school administration is typically not looking to the future.

PS: as far as using the additional digital channels effectively, I'm not saying they will... I'm just saying there's a POTENTIAL.

More than likely it's just going to be MORE voice tracking and cyber dj computer generated monkey jocks... rather than any new employees and local based programming.

Quinnipiac Radio Tower Removed!

To my fellow radio professionals and enthusiasts:

Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT recently removed the tower for
their student run FM station. No notice was given to the students, as
they simply returned to school with WQAQ off the air. According to a
campus official the tower was removed "because it was an unsightly
eyesore right in the center of campus." They are in danger of losing
their license should they not replace the tower within the next year.

With more overnight and weekend shifts either voicetracked or
eliminated altogether, college radio is where tomorrow's talent can
polish their on air technique.

Please take the time to write Quinnipiac president John Lahey and
encourage him to replace WQAQ's tower.

Dead blog? History???

In the words of Monty Python, "it's not dead yet"

not just yet...

I'm still working with Texas Radio Theatre - doing some minimal broadcasting and doing lots of sound design in the Dallas theatre circles.

My Mom, after breaking her neck is doing lots better - she's healed up surprisingly fast and is back to work in a limited way.

My previous hiccups with the computer were just a pre-cursor to a horrific series of events that crippled two of my systems, and resulted in some data-loss.

It was a one, two three punch and I lost an entire hard drive in the process. I try to have all my stuff backed up and redundant between three systems (two desktops and one notebook)... but when one goes down and then another... Instead of repairing and keeping the back up chain going, I just shifted all my activity to the next best computer.

So, literally the day after I counted my blessings - BOOM! wirr wiir wirr CLICK.

brother!

Getting all the hardware and surviving data restored and in time to meet other deadlines took all my time and effort...

Four months later, I'm just to a point when I can take a breath.

WEEEEEEEE!

Sorry for no updates and lack of communication.

In a nutshell: My Mom broke her neck last month, I had several insane deadlines and projects going on at the same time, my Dad dropped in for a visit, then my wife's Mom went into the hospital for a routine operation - things happened, and now she's spending the week, and in the middle of all that my hard drive had a senior moment and forgot it's operating system.

It took me some time to recover, and then it happened again... I bought a new hard drive and went through the process only to have more things go wrong.

Anyhow - I think my system is rebuilt to where it was prior to when it 'sneezed'. Does that mean it's fixed. Not really. I'm having some real problems with my USB device driver - and I might need to see about upgrading some hardware really - really soon.

Well, now that some of this dust seems to be settling, maybe I can start putting some junk on line again from what now seems like last year.

Again... I should be back now...
